What is brand drift?

Brand drift is when a site's colours, fonts, spacing or button styles slowly stop matching as more pages and edits are added.

Why it matters for a small business site

Visitors trust a site that looks like one company. When every page uses slightly different blues, heading sizes and buttons, the site looks unfinished, and each fix by hand takes longer than the edit that caused it. It is common with AI builders that create each change from scratch instead of inside a saved design system.

How to check yours

  1. Put your home page and two inner pages side by side: do the headings, buttons and spacing match?
  2. List every colour code the site uses. More than your brand colours plus a few greys means it has drifted.
  3. After each AI edit, check the new section's buttons and headings against the ones already on the page.

What good looks like

Every page and every edit uses the same saved colours, two fonts at set sizes, one spacing scale and one button style. New sections look like they were always there.

Common mistakes

  • Letting each AI edit invent its own shade or font because the request didn't mention the brand.
  • Fixing drift by eye, page by page, instead of fixing the saved design system once.
  • Only checking the home page, where drift shows least.
  • Treating heading sizes on phones as an afterthought; that is where it shows first.

In SketchXFlow

Your site's colours, fonts, spacing and building blocks, saved once so every page and every edit uses the same ones.

Put it into practice

Try it on a design of your own

SketchXFlow saves your brand's colours and fonts before the first page is drawn and keeps every AI edit inside them. In our October 2026 test, 199 AI edits across 20 generated sites (ten everyday edits each, such as adding an FAQ or testimonials) kept every brand colour and font the same. Spacing, heading sizes and button styles are checked before you publish.
