What is a title tag?

A title tag is the page title set in its code: the text shown in the browser tab and, usually, as the clickable headline in search results.

Why it matters for a small business site

It’s the first thing people read about your page on Google, and one of the clearest signals of what the page is about. A vague title such as “Home” wastes that space.

How to check yours

  1. Hover over your browser tab, or view the page source and look for <title>.
  2. Search site:yourdomain.com and read your titles as a stranger would.
  3. Check that no two pages share a title.

What good looks like

Unique for every page, with the main thing first and your business name last (“Emergency Plumber in Leeds | Smith & Sons”), and short enough to show in full. Around 50 to 60 characters is a common guide.

Common mistakes

  • “Home”, “Untitled” or just the business name on every page.
  • The same keyword repeated several times.
  • Titles so long that Google cuts off the part that matters.
  • A title that says something different from the headline on the page. They can differ, but they should agree.
